On April 27, the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) hosted the International Forum for Trilateral Cooperation (IFTC) 2021 in Seoul, Korea, with the theme of “In light of the TCS 10-Year Anniversary: The New Trilateral Partnership in the Next Decade.” The forum was held in an online-offline hybrid format and attracted more than 500 online and offline participants from the three countries. 

To commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the TCS, CHUNG Eui-yong, Minister of Foreign Affairs of ROK, MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and WANG Yi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China, delivered written congratulatory messages to reconfirm the importance of trilateral cooperation and give future guidance for TCS. 

At the IFTC opening ceremony, CHOI Jongmoon, 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK, AIBOSHI Koichi, Ambassador of Japan to the ROK, XING Haiming, Ambassador of China to the ROK and BAN Ki-moon, 8th UN Secretary-General/Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the ROK delivered congratulatory remarks and a keynote speech. 

At the opening ceremony, MICHIGAMI Hisashi, Secretary-General of the TCS, highlighted the significant progress achieved by the TCS since its inception in 2011 by summarizing its achievements in areas of economy, education, health, and disaster management, among many others. He further emphasized that mutual respect and the willingness to learn from each other were important values that the three countries have been upholding to achieve mutual progress. In addition, he reconfirmed that the TCS would make its utmost efforts to continue to strengthen future-oriented cooperation following the declared at the 8th Trilateral Summit. 

This year’s Forum highlighted the significance and achievements of trilateral cooperation and explored practical cooperation mechanisms for the coming decade through the 3 sessions of “Achievements of TCS and Future Trilateral Cooperation,” “Voices from the Business Community – The Path Forward for Revitalized Economic Cooperation amid the Pandemic” and “Empowering the Future Generation – Trilateral Youth Community Building.” Renowned moderators and speakers from the three countries shared their experiences and opinions with the participants and worked towards strengthening the trilateral cooperation. 

The IFTC, one of the signature projects of the TCS, provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness, review past achievements, and explore future-oriented policy references of the trilateral cooperation to the three countries. The Forum was sponsored by the prominent media of the three countries– Chosun Ilbo, Asahi Shimbun and People’s Daily.
