The Culture City of East Asia (CCEA) 2019 Toshima Closing Ceremony was held on November 24, 2019, at a newly opened “Tokyo Tatemono Brillia HALL” in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, Japan. The closing ceremony was participated by Mr. TAKANO Yukio, Mayor of Toshima Ward (Japan), Mr. YU Yajun, Vice Director of Xi’an Cultural and Tourism Bureau (China), and Mr. CHO In Kwon, Director General of the Culture, Tourism & Sports Bureau of Incheon Metropolitan City (ROK). 

At the Opening Performance “CJK Traditional Instruments’ Melody”, traditional songs were performed with Erhu (Chinese strings instrument), Koto (Japanese strings instrument), and Gayageum (Korean strings instrument) and Changgo (Korean drum). 

Mr. TAKANO Yukio, the Toshima Mayor spoke at the Hosts’ Remarks. He mentioned that “the exchanges between the citizen’s ‘souls’ based on culture will break the walls, even with frictions among nations”.  The hosts’ remarks was followed by Mr. MIYATA Ryohei, Commissioner for Cultural Affairs’, mentioning the importance of recognizing Toshima as a Culture City, even after the selection year. Vice Director Yu of Xi’an and Director General Cho of Incheon delivered congratulatory remarks to hope for the development of the three cities after the one year of exchange.  As a guest, Tokyo Mayor Ms. KOIKE Yuriko delivered a congratulatory remarks, and expressed her hope for the cultural development of Toshima.

The Ceremony included a reflection of the past cooperation year with a video, and signing of a Culture City of East Asia 2019 Joint Statement, agreeing on the future cooperation among the cities. Cultural fine arts performances were presented by the three countries, and the ceremony closed with a finale of joint choir performance by around 200 Toshima residents ranging from elementary school children to senior citizens.
