Mechanisms 8th Tripartite Health Ministers’ Meeting in Kyoto, Japan

The 8th Tripartite Health Ministers’ Meeting was held in Kyoto, Japan on November 29, 2015. The Meeting was presided by Mr. SHIOZAKI Yasuhisa, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan with the participation of Mr. CHUNG Chin-Youb, Minister of Health and Welfare of the Republic of Korea and Ms. LI Bin, Minister of National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China. Dr. SHIN Young-soo, Regional Director of World Health Organization, West Pacific Regional Office (WHO-WPRO) and Dr. UMEZAWA Akima, Deputy Secretary-General of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) participated as observers.
At the meeting, the three Ministers exchanged the views on health-related policies in each country and common concerns on health and welfare shared by the three countries. The Ministers discussed the measures of promoting tripartite health cooperation on the agendas of “Emergency preparedness and response” and “Aging Society and Non-Communicable Diseases”. The three countries reached the agreement on exploring the unification of the criteria of quarantine system among the three countries throughout relevant discussions. On behalf of the TCS, Deputy Secretary-General UMEZAWA Akima delivered a speech at the beginning of the meeting. Concerning various urgent challenges on health and welfare faced with the three countries, DSG UMEZAWA highlighted the important role of the leadership of the three governments in solving the pressing health issues. He also stressed that the TCS is fully committed to supporting the Tripartite Health Ministers’ Meeting by implementing the follow-up projects.
At the press conference after the meeting, the three Ministers announced the adoption of the Joint Statement of the 8th Tripartite Health Ministers Meeting. As the side event of the 8th Tripartite Health Ministers’ Meeting, “the 9th Japan-China-Korea Forum for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention” was held on November 28, 2015 which gathered the experts from National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) of Japan, Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), discussing the measures of strengthening the cooperation on infectious disease.
The next Tripartite Health Ministers’ Meeting will be held in the ROK, 2016.
