Mechanisms 4th Trilateral Education Ministers' Meeting Held in Seoul 2024.06.15

The 4th Trilateral Education Ministers' Meeting took place in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK), on June 15, 2024. The meeting was chaired by Mr. LEE Joo-ho, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Education of the ROK, and attended by Mr. Masahito Moriyama, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology of Japan, and Mr. Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education of China. The Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup also participated and delivered congratulatory remarks. 

On behalf of TCS, SG LEE emphasized the significance of this gathering, the first in four years, following the 9th Trilateral Summit in Seoul. He highlighted TCS’s key initiatives, such as the expansion of the Campus Asia alumni exchange program, youth exchange programs including the Youth Ambassador Program and the Trilateral Youth Summit, and the CJK Children's Story Exchange project. SG LEE underscored the critical role of trilateral education cooperation for the future development of Korea, Japan, and China, and assured that TCS will continue to support the ministries of education of the three countries with a sense of mission and responsibility. 

At the meeting, the three ministers shared views on the three main agendas: 1) strengthening cooperation in future education in the ear of digital transformation, 2) finding measures to revitalize future generation exchanges among the three countries and, 3) developing the CAMPUS Asia Program. 

At the conclusion of the meeting, the ministers issued the "2024 ROK-Japan-China Education Innovation Statement." The statement emphasized the commitment to sharing digital education policies and best practices to promote digital transformation in all educational areas systematically. It also highlighted the encouragement of exchanges, mutual visits, and cultural experiences among students, and the support for various activities such as youth sports and cultural events to foster understanding and friendship. 

The statement further committed to expanding the number of university students participating in Campus Asia to 30,000 by 2030. Recognizing the vital role of educational cooperation in Asian and global education, the three countries affirmed their dedication to strengthening cooperation, particularly within multilateral organizations, including ASEAN+3, the East Asia Summit (EAS), and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
