Beijing, China - On August 13, 2023, the Trilateral Youth Summit (TYS) 2023 kicked off in Beijing, China. Organized by the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) and co-organized by China Foreign Affairs University and the Foreign Affairs Office of Chengdu Municipal Government, the program aims to promote mutual understanding and build friendship among the youth from China, Japan and the ROK. Under the theme of "Embrace Shared-Future," the 2023 TYS features activities including Model Trilateral Summit Meeting and Committees, lectures on different topics, and cultural experiences. A total of 100 undergraduate and graduate students from the three countries participate in the program.
The opening ceremony on August 14 was attended by TCS Secretary-General Amb. OU Boqian, President of China Foreign Affairs University Mr. WANG Fan, Vice President of China Public Diplomacy Association Mr. HU Zhengyue, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Mrs. FANG Hong, Member of the Japanese House of Representatives and former State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Mr. WASHIO Eiichiro, Former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of ROK and former ROK Ambassador to Japan Mr. SHIN Kak-soo.
In her opening remarks, Secretary-General OU noted that this year's summit is particularly special, with the student delegation expanded to an unprecedented 100 individuals, which shows the return of face-to-face youth exchanges among the three countries and gathers brilliant and creative ideas of the CJK youth. She encouraged the participants to maintain an open-minded attitude, actively engage in communication, and build mutual friendship so as to play a significant role in promoting "lasting peace, common prosperity, and shared culture" in the region. She hopes that this program will inject impetus to the improvement of mutual perceptions among the three countries.
President WANG Fan said, the Trilateral Youth Summit has developed into a signature project in the field of trilateral youth cooperation, providing students from the three countries with a valuable opportunity and platform for in-depth interaction and equal exchange. He encouraged young participants to contribute their wisdom, showcase their talents, express their opinions, engage in discussion, and provide ideas and strategies to advance trilateral cooperation.
Deputy Director-General FANG Hong pointed out that youth exchanges are closely related to the common future of China, Japan, and ROK. Maintaining peace and stability is the responsibility of the young generation, and only through peace and stability can they realize their self-worth and aspirations. She further suggested that youth should draw wisdom from history and traditional culture, think deeply, work hard, and collaborate to make the most of each day and live life to the fullest.
Vice President HU Zhengyue, Mr. WASHIO Eiichiro and Mr. SHIN Kak-soo delivered keynote speeches. Vice President HU Zhengyue expressed his views on friendly exchanges and cooperation among youth from the three countries, and emphasized the importance of eliminating misunderstanding, spreading positive energy and improving mutual perception so as to sow the seeds and cultivate the foundation for trilateral exchange and cooperation. Mr. WASHIO Eiichiro encouraged young people to engage in candid communication, deepen understanding, distinguish right from wrong, learn from each other's strengths and hoped that young people would take this summit as an opportunity to jointly create the future we all look forward to. Mr. SHIN Kak-soo expressed that young people should actively communicate and exchange ideas, be inclusive and understanding towards each other in order to lay the foundation for the Northeast Asia leading the world towards peace and prosperity.
Following the ceremony, a dialogue was held with students and ambassadors including former Chinese ambassador to Cambodia, ROK, and Thailand, Mr. NING Fukui, former Japanese ambassador to China, Mr. YOKOI Yutaka, and the 1st SG of TCS and former ROK ambassador to India, Mr. SHIN Bongkil who shared their valuable insights and experiences on trilateral and bilateral relations among the three countries.
In addition to the dialogue, lectures on the role of youth, trilateral mechanism and shared culture will be provided by TCS SG OU, Peking University Professor ZHANG Yiwu, and Dalian University of Foreign Languages Professor XUE Xiaoping.
During their stay in Beijing, the participants will visit the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, as well as explore famous historical sites Qianmen Dazhalan and Mutianyu Great Wall.
From August 17 to 22, the youth participants will continue the program and take part in cultural experiences in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The Model Trilateral Summit will be held on August 20, where delegations will jointly draft the "Joint Declaration."
The Trilateral Youth Summit (TYS) was established in 2014, with a goal to promote mutual understanding and building friendship among Chinese, Japanese, and Korean undergraduate and graduate students, through social events and cultural tours.
