On January 23, 2022, the RCEP Media & Think Tank Roundtable Forum was held online by China Institute for Reform and Development Institute (CIRD), China Daily and Hainan Institute for Free Trade Port Studies. TCS Secretary-General OU Boqian attended the forum and spoke at Session “Promotion for Media & Think Tank Cooperation Plans and Actions for RCEP Regional Humanities Exchanges”.

In her speech, SG OU stated that RCEP will not only stimulate further development in economic and trade, but also promote more frequent people-to-people exchange among the member states. She noted that public opinions towards each other in the regional countries have reached a low point in recent years. The pandemic has hindered face-to-face communications. In addition, rapid development of internet and ICT has, to some extent, turned cyberspace into an outlet for extreme emotions and a platform for false information.

SG OU indicated that in order to create a healthier virtual community and to facilitate better understanding among the peoples, governments should reinforce legislation for cyberspace, media should strengthen its role in guiding positive public opinions and amplifying rational voices, and think tanks should provide RCEP policy advice to the governments and policy interpretation to the public via unbiased analysis. TCS will also spare no effort to promote friendship among the peoples.

SG OU stated that 2022 is the commencing year of second decade of TCS’ development, and TCS will cooperate closely with all stakeholders to ensure the region in fostering a spirit of “lasting peace, common prosperity and shared culture”.

At the Forum, prominent scholars inside and outside of the region shared their opinions and suggestions in promoting economic integration and people-to-people exchange in the framework of RCEP.
