Trilateral Artist Talk & Exhibition: Past, Present, and Future of Lacquer Art

The Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) hosted ‘Trilateral Artist Talk & Exhibition: Past, Present, and Future of Lacquer Art’ at its conference hall on August 17th. This project specially organized to enhance the understanding on the history of mutual exchanges and trilateral cooperation in the realm of art. The exhibition began with artist talk between the lacquer artists from the China, Japan, and Republic of Korea and continued until August 30th exhibiting total 24 art works including 14 paintings and 10 sculptures. 

During last two weeks, the exhibition gathered more than 300 visitors from the three countries including government officials, renowned scholars, journalists, students and the public. Especially, Mr. CHOI Kwangjin, Head of Center for People Diplomacy of ROK MOFA, Ms. ZHANG Zhonghua, Culture Minister of Chinese Embassy in Seoul, and Mr. YAMASAKI Hiroki, Director of Seoul Culture Center of Japan Foundation participated the opening session and expressed warmest welcome for the vigorous cultural activities hosted by the TCS and the importance of lacquer art as the shared cultural heritages among the three countries. Also, participants of the opening session enjoyed CJK tea ceremony served by tea masters from East Asia Tea Institute and well-coordinated harmony of CJK traditional music thanks to the performance of Daegeum (ROK), Erhu (China), and Shamisen (Japan) artists. 

In the following artist talk session, Mr. LEE Jong-hun, Chairman of Korean People’s Artists Association, Mr. MIZUKAMI Osamu, Professor of Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, and Ms. XIA Yeiping, Assistant Chair of the School of Arts and Crafts of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute made keynote speeches introducing the past, present, and future trends and characteristics of lacquer art in each country. Furthermore, in the artist talk moderated by Dr. SUN Seunghye, Director of Cultural Cooperation of ROK MOFA, Mr. YANG Feijang, Professor, Tsinghua University, Mr. YANG Lisan, Professor of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Mr. MIZUKAMI Osamu, Professor of Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, Mr. TOMA Shigeru, Professor of Okinawa Prefectural University, Mr. SONG Wan-geun, lecturer of Korea University, and Ms. CHO Hae-ree, lecturer of Seoul Nation University and the curator of this exhibition shared their artistic vision and cooperation experience with artists from neighboring countries. Also, each artist had an opportunities to explain their own art master pieces and communicate with the floor without border nor hesitation.
