Mechanisms 25th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting (TEMM25) in Jeju, ROK

On September 29th, 2024, Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) delegation headed by Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup participated in the 25th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting (TEMM25) in Jeju, the Republic of Korea. Prior to the Ministers Meeting, SG LEE also held bilateral meetings with Mr. KIM Wansup, Minister of Environment of the Republic of Korea, Mr. HUANG Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of China, and Mr. ITO Shintaro, Minister of Environment of Japan.
At the Ministerial Meeting, the Ministers of the three countries gave presentations on the environment policies of each country and exchanged views on key environment issues, and shared best practices and progress achieved in addressing climate change, air quality, plastic waste management, biodiversity conservation, and circular economy.
The three ministers were reported on the progress in the implementation of the Tripartite Joint Action Plan (TJAP) and reached consensus on the new priority areas for the next cycle of TJAP, including “Improving Environmental Qualities”; “Promoting Carbon Neutrality and Green Economy”; and “Enhancing Environmental Welfare”. The Meeting adopted the Joint Communiqué as the outcome document.
During the Ministerial Meeting, SG LEE delivered his remarks, where he explained the central role of TEMM in consolidating trilateral cooperation for 25 years, and congratulated their achievements being recognized in the Joint Declaration of the 9th Trilateral Summit. He further asserted that TCS will continue to support TEMM through environment programs in the three countries.
During his bilateral meetings with the environment ministers of the three countries on September 28th, SG LEE introduced the TCS and its environment-focused projects such as the Trilateral Environment Teachers Exchange Program (TTEP), and the Forum on Carbon Neutrality of China, Japan, and Korea, which received active support and participation from the three ministries. The three Ministers thanked TCS for its continued support for TEMM and expressed their hopes to further expand collaboration in the near future.
The Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting was initiated in 1999, and celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. TEMM26 will be held next year in China.
