On December 9, 2022, the 14th Top Regulators’ Meeting on Nuclear Safety (TRM) was held via video conference. The meeting was chaired by Executive Commissioner and Secretary-General LIM Seungcheol of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) of Korea, with the participation of Commissioner BAN Nobuhiko of the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) of Japan and Vice Administrator and Director General JIANG Guang of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (National Nuclear Safety Administration) (MEE/NNSA) of China. TCS Deputy Secretary-General BEK Bumhym also attended the meeting as an observer and delivered opening remarks.

In his remarks, DSG BEK reiterated the indispensable nature of nuclear safety cooperation, mentioning that the three countries’ geographical inseparability renders themselves collectively vulnerable to transverse consequences of a nuclear disaster. In this line, he expressed appreciation for the three nuclear regulatory authorities’ unwavering efforts to ensure nuclear safety in East Asia and strengthen cooperation through TRM. DSG BEK added that the TCS is ready to provide necessary support to TRM.

The three agencies shared updates on the status and progress of nuclear safety regulatory activities in each country and exchanged information and experiences on topics of common interest. The next TRM will be held in China in 2023.
