Mechanisms 1st Trilateral Education Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul, ROK 2016.01.30

The 1st Trilateral Education Ministers’ Meeting was held in Seoul, ROK on January 30, 2016. The Meeting was presided by Mr. LEE Jun Shik, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education of the ROK, with the attendance of Mr. HASE Hiroshi, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and Mr. YUAN Guiren, Minister of Education of China. The TCS Board, headed by Secretary-General YANG Houlan, also participated in the Meeting and delivered congratulatory remarks. 


At the Meeting, the three Ministers shared views on 1) establishing a foundation for trilateral education cooperation, 2) strengthening student exchange to foster creative talents, 3) strengthening higher education cooperation for the establishment of East Asian Education Community, and 4) respective country’s efforts for education reformation. 

The three Ministers agreed on the regularization of the CAMPUS Asia program and to increase the number of consortiums as well as to expand financial support. They also agreed to establish more exchange programs among university students such as university students’ workshop on global citizenship education. Exchanges among primary and secondary schools were also emphasized and the three Ministers agreed to increase the number of sister-schools among the three countries to 1,000. Minister LEE asked for close cooperation from the TCS to support and follow-up on the outcomes of the Meeting. 

On behalf of the TCS, Secretay-General YANG Houlan delivered congratulatory remarks and stressed the importance of education exchanges in the development of trilateral cooperation. He emphasized role of future generations to realize the high potential that the three countries’ cooperation has.  

After the Meeting, the three Ministers announced the Seoul Declaration for Strengthening Trilateral Education Cooperation, which highlighted the willingness of the three Ministries to further strengthen cooperation in the field of education.
 
The next Trilateral Education Ministers’ Meeting will be convened in Japan in 2017.
