The ROK Culture City of East Asia (CCEA) Cooperation Workshop 2019 was held in Gwangju, ROK, on December 10-11, 2019. It was the first opportunity designed to promote quality improvement of exchange programs and strengthen the solidarity among the ROK CCEAs against the backdrop of changes in conditions of the three countries. This year, the workshop was attended by 15 participants from 5 CCEAs and relevant organizations.

The workshop was organized in consecutive presentations by the Space Cultural Center, TCS and CCEAs, followed by discussion. The presentations covered (1) suggestions on the CCEA program by Mr. CHOI Jung Han, President of the Space Cultural Center, (2) an overview of the CJK local city exchanges and introduction to the research project by Mr. NAGAFUCHI Kenji, Director of Social and Cultural Affairs of the TCS, (3) progress, achievements and challenges of major programs by the past CCEAs, and (4) an outline of next year's plan by Suncheon City, the 2020 CCEA of the ROK. The last discussion section was added to exchange views on improving the quality of the CCEA programs as well as suggestions and cooperative ideas among CCEAs.

The CCEA is a trilateral initiative that was agreed at the 4th Trilateral Culture Ministers' Meeting (TCMM) in 2012. Since 2014, each country has designated one city to serve as CCEA for that year. The three designated cities not only carry out a variety of cultural and art events but also engage in trilateral cultural exchanges that foster mutual understanding and friendship. In the ROK, 7 cities have been selected as CCEAs, specifically, Gwangju (2014), Cheongju (2015), Jeju (2016), Daegu (2017), Busan (2018), Incheon (2019) and Suncheon (2020).
