Mechanisms 7th Trilateral Summit in Tokyo, Japan 2018-05-09

The 7th Trilateral Summit among Japan, the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of Korea was held in Tokyo, Japan, on May 9, 2018. The Summit was chaired by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and attended by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, and the ROK President Moon Jae-in. The delegation of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), headed by Secretary-General Lee Jong-heon also participated in the Summit. Highlighting that it’s been 10 years since the first independent Trilateral Summit was convened, the Leaders reviewed the progress of the past decade and discussed the future direction of trilateral cooperation for the coming decade. The Leaders also shared the view that it is significant to hold the Trilateral Summit on a regular basis to lend political impetus to trilateral cooperation in a wide variety of areas.

After the Summit, Joint Declaration of the Seventh Japan-China-ROK Trilateral Summit was adopted along with the Annex on the list of Trilateral Meetings since November 2015. In the Declaration, the leaders appreciated and reaffirmed the TCS’ role in advancing trilateral cooperation, and expressed support for the capacity-building of the TCS as well as its broader participation in all trilateral mechanisms. The Leaders also reaffirmed that the launching of the Trilateral Cooperation Fund (TCF) will be instrumental for the development of trilateral cooperation projects.

Welcoming the “Panmunjeom Declaration” agreed at the historic 2018 Inter-Korean Summit, the Leaders have also adopted a special document addressing this achievement, namely, Joint Statement on the ‘2018 Inter-Korean Summit’ by the Leaders of Japan, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea.

The 8th Trilateral Summit will be held under China’s Chairpersonship.
